Hey y'all,
You probably hate forwards as much as I do, but this one is important and dispells various Net rumors that the "National ID" is not dead. Here is proof that it is. How this happened needs to be explained. Scott McDonald operates the Fight the Fingerprint webpage which is accessed thru:
http: //www.networkusa.org/index.shtml
When the "National ID" regs were first proposed in June, 1998, Scott coined for the first time the term "National ID" to identify these regs; that is precisely what they were. A decision was made then to oppose those regs by making objections to them and on the day they were first proposed on or about June 17, 1998, we posted letters to Scott's webpage to show people how to object to them. Within 45 days, the federal DOT had received about 1000 objections to these regs and it decided to extend the comment period for objections until mid-October, 1998. Before the comment period ended, more than 2700 objections had been received by DOT, all of which were posted to the DOT webpage. In response, Congress decided to "de-fund" implementation of those regs for 1 year. That one year period recently ended and as you can see from the below forward, this federal idea of a "National ID" is now essentially dead. Those who maintain otherwise on the Net are just dead wrong. The people spoke by making objections to this federal nonsense and that got the political opposition rolling. Ron Paul has now killed this effort. The idea of objecting to the implementaion of federal regs spread from the battle over the National ID to that regarding the "Know Your Customer" regs proposed last December 7, 1998. At that time, people knew the value of objecting to federal regs and not only did ScanThisNews (Scott) put forth a battle plan against those regs, so did many others and the objections to the KYC regs had plenty of popular support. By March of this year when the comment period for objecting to the KYC regs closed, more than 200,000 objections had been filed. We all know that plan to set up a giant spy network was defeated.
An important lesson needs to be learned from this example and it demonstrate an effective method to "battle the beast." This freedom movement is full of flaky ideas which are not only crazy but get people sent to jail. Theories like "we are really Brits," the "UCC is the thing to do," "the courts are private," NAMES IN CAPS, etc. not only have no legal support and don't work, but hold us all up to ridicule and make us look stupid and crazy (this also applies to that lunacy know as Roger Elvick's "redemption process"). But further, trying to give the typical patriot an impossible task which he can't handle never does anyone any good. We need to focus on engaging in tasks and battles which can be won and people need to be given jobs which they can accomplish rather than a task known in advance to be impossible. Patriots need to do productive things which they can achieve rather than an impossible task.

Scan Readers,
Section 656(b) of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 was definitely repealed by Congress this past legislative session. Although the language adopted as part of the final year-2000 Transportation budget bill was introduced by Senator Shelby, it was largely due to the efforts of Ron Paul which paved the way for the law's defeat.
Congressman Paul is working on many other similar issues as well, if you are not already familiar with he work.
While there is still a great deal of work left to be done to stop the standardization of driver's licenses and state requirements for SSNs, (which, if it continues will ultimately will result in a de facto national ID), defeat of the federal law that forced this standardization upon the states was a major victory.

It has come to my attention that there is a rumor spreading on the Net that the repeal of the national ID card has not yet been signed into law. In order to squash this rumors please distribute the following message as widely as possible. Thanks!
The repeal of section 656 (b) of the 1996 immigration reform act, which turned stare drivers' licenses into national ID cards, was signed into law on October 9, so the National ID card is dead. If your state is requiring you to get fingerprinted or is collecting other biometrics data when you get a driver' license it is because your state government has decided to collect this information.
While stopping the national ID card was a great victory for liberty there is still much work to be done to roll back the surveillance state. This is why Congressman Paul is working on legislation to ensure federal funds are not used to collect and store "biometrics data' and he is continuing to work to pass HR 220, the Freedom and Privacy Restoration Act. HR 220 prevents the use of the SSN as a national identifier and forbids the federal government from using any standard identifier to monitor the private transactions of individual citizens.
Thanks again for your efforts on behalf of constitutional government.
