In May 1998, Forest Glen Durland hand delivered three letters to two principals at two of the finest high schools in the nation. The principals receive identical letters, except, of course, for the salutation. The purpose was to determine if America could be awakened through the schools, and if so, to do it. Since the adults are fast asleep at the controls, perhaps the children can save themselves before Goals 2000 captures their minds. This real life episode is, somehow, out of a science fiction novel.
Forest has been substitute teaching at these schools successfully for several years. Now that he is established (i.e., as much as substitute teachers can be) and known, he has launched this project to wake the teachers and students.
The three letters are re-printed below. Both high schools are located in Silicone Valley in wealthy, prestigious areas. Minority race enrollment may be as high as 50 percent.
One of the schools has instituted a "houses" curriculum structure that may be straight out Clinton's Goals 2000 by way of Stanford University. A previous princpal that was responsidle for this structure would not comment on the source of his curriculum. His letter is reprinted below as the "Houses Letter".
Both principals are nice people to work for.
Please understand that the same letter, with different salutation, was hand delivered to each principal. There was no preference given to either principal before delivering the letters.

Results and Comments
The feedback has been terribly disappointing, though not surprising. From the principals: The kook look. One principal glared at me like I might be some sort of low scum. The other gave a blank, unbelieving look. If this response is typical of our nation's high schools, we have lost it.
A little more hope was found in three of the teachers. They can at least see the problem, which offers hope. But they are afraid to speak out because it is not politically correct. That puts the burden of truth back on the shoulders of the principals, who must open the doors for their teachers to seek truth and dispense that truth to their students.
Three other teachers were less than hospitable. Their minds are made up and closed. They already have their agenda.
I critiqued four of the economics texts that are used in this district. Those books downright lie. The truth about money is simply not there.
Some will ask about my authority and background to criticize texts and procedures. My answer is simple. It matters not who I am. What matters is that I speak truth. That, you must decide, regardless who speaks. Bear in mind that you will not find the truth in our colleges any more. We have another job there with the teachers that teach our teachers how to teach. You might ask how many of those college profs taught in grades 1-12 for any amount of time. The teachers that do the work don't come up with those goofy teaching ideas. Those who do not teach do. Think about that for awhile.

Dear [First Name]:
To further my research into a complex and pressing situation nationally, it may be of great assistance to study the philosophy that guides your leadership at [School Name]High. There is a powerful movement infecting all aspects of our society and economy. For the future of my children and grandchildren, I am exposing the truth.
For some years now I have been aware of the fact that the content of our textbooks has been controlled by less than moral forces far beyond you. What I am looking for now is that surreptitious influence at our higher levels of education where theories are fomented.
[First Name], I need your definition and philosophy of individualism. Brevity will better facilitate my research. Also needed is a list of the universities and leading professors that you relate to.
Possibilities and ways that a covert movement may be unknowingly perpetuating the diffusion of individuality into obscurity are prime objectives in this research. This has global implications stemming from causes not in your field of expertise, thus eluding your cognizance. This item, crucial to the very life of our American nation, may be related directly to your work as a school administrator. The very lives of your students are most probably in grave danger. For if the corollary and theories I have developed are even partially true, hell on earth awaits our children and grandchildren. They will be mentally enslaved and America as we know her will exist no longer. Please note, [First Name], that I am not a doomsdayer, for I have a solution. But your help in sharing information is needed to further my research.
[First Name], if the research I am doing has any merit at all, and I have good reason to believe that it does, then you may be unknowingly doing the very opposite of what you are trying to do. You love children and want to help each one and all of them. I have assumed that you believe in the individual freedom of each student in your school. But there is a movement afoot that looms over all of America as its tentacles lurk among everyone. For my own children and grandchildren I must unravel this entanglement. To my encouragement, I probably have most of the work completed.
If what I am looking for is valid, you can not afford not to be aware. It may be true that individualism is being destroyed at a global level in a massive assault to cause people to destroy their environments, their societies and their national governments while mentally enslaving themselves.
It is frightening to realize that the vast majority of people are totally unaware of what is happening. The ironic tragedy is that these victims fight to defend the very weapon that is destroying them. It is the exemplar in weaponry. Note only are they not listening, they are fighting the truth. People have been lulled into sightless complacency by the Sirens of imaginary money and are fast sailing onto economic rocks.
Examining your philosophy from the point of view dictated by my research could uncover illuminating information in my effort to trace the image of a covert monster. Your help with this crucial project will be immensely appreciated.
