re: AB 1216
Parental Rights
AB 1216 passed out of the Senate Education Committee late today. All four Republicans (including McPherson) voted for the bill--we picked up the necessary 3 Democrat votes.
Those voting for the bill:
Sen. Ray Haynes (R) Sen. Ralph Dills (D)
Sen. William Knight (R) Sen. Dede Alpert (D)
Sen. Dick Monteith (R) Sen. Tom Hayden (D)
Sen. Bruce McPherson (R)
This is truly an all time first! The bill was co-sponsored by Howard Kaloogian (R) and Michael Sweeney (D). This has never happened before and is a real victory.
Everyone who made telephone calls and letters--thank you! (You many want to follow up with a phone call to your own Senator and thank him/her for their vote--let them know you followed the vote.)
You might be interested in knowing that Sen. Byron Sher (D-Stanford) told Assemblyman Kaloogian "You are talking to the religious left--philosophically, I'm opposed to parents' rights." [That's right here in Silicone Valley, Folks. Time to talk to Sher. Forest]
And Sen. Jack O'Connell (D-Santa Barbara) said, "Intuitively, I'm opposed to parental rights."
The CTA did not submit a written opposition to the bill, however, they were lobbying heavily against it and, in fact, contacted the ACLU, PTA and People for the American Way to try to get them to oppose the bill. The ACLU actually withdrew their opposition.
It was an interesting day in Sacramento!
