POLITICS1 REPORT: SPECIAL GOP CONVENTION NOTICE

Nope, this is not an issue of our long overdue newsletter today. Instead, this is just a short reminder to check out our live, interactive online coverage of the Republican National Convention from Philadelphia. Politics1.com has teamed with Pseudo.com to allow you to produce your own convention coverage. You can choose from five different 360-degree cameras, six separate audio feeds or watch the official "GOP-TV" video feeds from the podium. Take control of the cameras, join in chat and interact with politicians, pundits and celebrities! You can find it all online now -- gavel to gavel -- at:

http://www.pseudo.com/convention_politics1/

To watch, you'll need to make sure you've got at least RealPlayer 7 installed on your computer. If you don't have it on your system yet, simply follow the links from the above page and download it for free. (The RealPlayer 7 Basic and the RealPlayer 8 Basic Beta are both free and both will work fine for displaying these cool video features).

LATEST POLL NUMBERS

The latest Reuters/Zogby poll -- just released this afternoon -- shows the race starting to narrow. The numbers: George Bush (R) - 41.6%, Al Gore (D) - 38.1%, Ralph Nader (Green) - 7.0%, Pat Buchanan (Reform) - 2.6%, Harry Browne (Libertarian) - 0.6%, Howard Phillips (Constitution) - 0.5%, John Hagelin (Reform/Natural Law) - 0.1% and Undecided - 9.5%. By contrast, a Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll conducted last week showed Bush leading Gore by a comfortable 50% to 39% vote, followed by Nader at 4% and Buchanan at 1%. In addition to any shift in national opinions, differing results may also be caused by the way poll questions are worded, sampling size and different sampling methodologies.

I MUST BE CLAIRVOYANT ...

While some people say there is no longer any suspense left in national conventions, I'm not so sure. Still, I'm going to risk spoiling the surprises for you by making my predictions about the convention outcome. First, I predict Texas Governor George W. Bush will win the Presidential nomination on the first ballot. Secondly -- and more boldly -- I predict that Bush will make a move to lock-up Wyoming's three electoral votes into the GOP column. As it was only a few years ago (actually, it was 36 years ago) that the Democrats last won Wyoming in a Presidential race, I predict that former Wyoming Congressman Dick Cheney will win the Vice Presidential nomination to eliminate any electoral uncertainty about his homestate. Call me crazy, but those are my predictions. And, if I spoiled the surprises for the you ... sorry! Stay tuned soon for my predictions on the Democratic ticket, which I'll boldly proclaim after August 8th.

FINALLY, A RATHER IMPORTANT QUESTION (SERIOUSLY!) ...

During the 1998 elections, I sent out The Politics1 Report emails 2-3 times per week. A typical issue then contained 2-4 short stories. These days, I send out the newsletter much less frequently but each issue is now considerably longer (12-20 stories are fairly typical). So, which format do you prefer: more frequent issues with fewer articles versus less frequent issues but more and longer articles? Please drop me a note at mailto:publisher@politics1.com and let me know. I may not get around to personally answering all of them because of the volume of emails I receive, but be assured that I'll read (and appreciate) every response you send.

Until next time,

Ron Gunzburger
