It's September so let's talk about October. Clinton is about to get some more bad press. That means we're about due for another October Surprise.
The independent prosecutor is ready to release an unfavorable report, probably concerning both Bill and Hillary. Congress is about to investigate Gore's forcing INS to make American citizens of all sorts of perverts, crooks and otherwise undesirables. It's disbarment time for Bill. A couple women are thinking seriously about coming out with yet more charges against him. A very respectable group is compiling information on Lieberman that makes him out to be little more than a whining dweeb with a strong socialist bent. And, Clinton has been goofing off so much lately that his handlers are very worried about what he may do -- and that someone in the press may actually report on his antics.
Oh . . . and Clinton wants to shut down the government again, no matter what concessions the Republicans in Congress give him.
So, the White House war room needs another real war that will allow them to control the news for a couple weeks. Which means, they may have the military kill people someplace so most Americans will concentrate on that rather than administration wrongdoings. The White House must control the news cycles for a while, else Al and Hillary can't win.
Ninety percent of the media, of course, will go along with anything they are told. Few "journalists" ever bother checking their facts anymore, anyway. Besides, they want the far left to win in November.
Both the New York Times and Washington Post are pushing for big government socialism. There was a time when they actually dug for a story, but those days are over -- unless Republicans win in November, that is. Instead, today they repeat just about anything the liberals in government feed them.
Anyone remember the New York Times Chicken Little North Pole story? They reported: "The North Pole is melting. The thick ice that has for ages covered the pole has turned to water, recent visitors there reported yesterday . . . something that has presumably never been seen before by humans and is more evidence that global warming may be real."
That was just as false as all of the other global warming stories, but this time they got called on it by a couple real scientists. So, a few days later they reported: "A clear spot has probably opened at the pole before, scientists say, because about 10 percent of the Arctic Ocean is clear of ice in a typical summer." It was "not necessarily related to global warming," they were forced to admit.
The New York Times could have looked that up on the Internet in less than five minutes. But, they ran with false information instead because that false information fitted their liberal agenda.
(Maximum sea ice covers an area of approximately 23 million square kilometers in March and a minimum area of 8 million square kilometers in September. <http://www.grida.no/geo1/ch/ch2_15.htm>)
Then there's their editorialist, Adam Clymer. He's supposed to be a reporter. But mostly he writes opinion pieces printed as "news." The New York Times doesn't care. They'll print anything that trashes Republicans.
And, speaking of Adam Clymer . . . because of him, a politician actually told the truth last week. At one of his stump speeches, GW noticed Clymer in the audience, pointed Clymer out to Cheney, and quietly called Clymer a popular euphemism for the posterior orifice. Except, Bush's mike was "live" at the time and a few people heard. So, that gave the media something to talk about for three days.
What the American media is not talking about is government. That is, they will not discuss the Constitutional form of government we should have versus the out and out socialism we are about to get no matter who wins in November. For instance, can anyone find medical treatment mentioned as a function authorized to the federal government in the Constitution? Tain't there! Therefore, they have no such power. Same with a few dozen other things Washington does.
The media reported on the United States v. Emerson case in the Fifth Circuit but neglected one of the most important points of the case. Assistant U. S. Attorney William Mateja told the court that the official opinion of the Clinton & Gore administration is that the Second Amendment does not extend an individual right to keep and bear arms. Therefore, Mateja implied, government may freely regulate our right to keep and bear arms, just as if we lived in a dictatorship.
One glaring problem with that fallacy is that even if the Second Amendment were erased from the Constitution, the federal government would still have absolutely no authority to regulate our personal firearms. It just ain't in there.
But, today's media neglects Constitutional facts, preferring instead to support each and every whim of big government, no matter how adversely the action impacts on the rights of the people.
So, it will not be much of a surprise if the media plays down the Clinton and Gore scandals for the rest of the year and instead joins others on the far-left in blaming Republicans for shutting down the government. And, whatever ridiculous "Wag the Dog" October Surprise scenario Clinton pulls this time can be expected to get many days of media coverage.
And so it goes. Clinton will leave. But not quietly.
About the only thing I remember about Cub Scouts is that my mother was Den Mother and my father wanted us to learn to make things instead of destroying them. And, I still have some of the things we made.
There's those five gallon wooden barrels my brother and I spent evenings sanding down to a perfectly smooth finish, stained and varnished for use as stools. They still have the upholstered tops to sit on because we cared for them very well over the years. Mine has a crystal radio set under the cover and I spent many nights listening to the Grand Old Opery on that thing when my parents thought I was upstairs sleeping.
Later came the Boy Scout Troop, and this time my father was a scoutmaster so I was expected to work at everything. As I remember, some of the knots were hard for me, but I fell right into the camping, fishing and shooting parts. I still have a bunch of little award merit badges, but no longer remember what some of them were for.
There's one I found that I am sure of, though, because we "ethnics" took some things very seriously after WWII. That was back in the days when Nike was a missile used to shoot down enemy aircraft, rather than a brand of shoe. And, they were starting to stage those Nikes all over our area.
We kids thought of ourselves as the ancillary ground crew to the radar and missile protection. That is, we were given a stack of flash-cards with silhouettes of friendly and enemy aircraft on them and instructed to learn the aircraft on sight. And, somehow, I was the first one around to know them all correctly. We never saw any enemy aircraft, of course. But, we could have probably identified one had it came over the neighborhood, and we knew where to report it.
Mostly, though, we learned respect for others and ourselves. Our troop met in a church. But, we had members from many religions there -- at least three races and nearly a dozen nationalities, too. We were American Boy Scouts first, whatever else later, after we got home. And, another thing, no matter what language one spoke at home, English was the only language spoken in public.
We were the Boy Scouts of America, after all.
"On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight," was (is) the Boy Scout oath recited by all one-hundred-million Scouts (as of last April). That was not set forth as our "goal." It was our requirement for being a Boy Scout. One did nothing to disgrace the Scout uniform. Or else. . . .
As kids, we were not allowed to talk back to adults. If we were confronted by a bad adult -- like a predatory homosexual -- we were to run to the nearest group of men and let them handle it. They would. Quickly, too. So we did not have many of those types of problems back then. It happened. Just not repeatedly.
And that's what I remember about being a Boy Scout. Scouting both supplemented and reinforced the moral and ethical values we learned at home and at church. It taught cooperation and teamwork in a way sports did not because there was usually no self-gratification through becoming a "star" or working for the winning score involved in Scouting. We learned things and helped people simply because we needed to learn things and wanted to help people. Nothing was expected or requested. That was just what we did.
It wasn't just me, of course. Most of the guys I knew were Boy Scouts for at least a couple years and many of us returned as adults to help out for a while. We all benefited from being a Scout and encouraged our children to join.
But, now the Boy Scouts need our help. The far-left, not wanting to leave anything decent in the country alone, is attacking Scouting simply because Scouts are trained to be "mentally awake and morally straight." That, of course, excludes homosexuality.
The opinion of the Boy Scouts, today, seems to be exactly the way we were all taught many, many years ago: "We respect other people's right to hold differing opinions and ask that they respect ours." This is all that should be expected of anyone. Nothing more and nothing less.
The Boy Scouts also say: "We believe an avowed homosexual is not a role model for the values espoused in the Scout Oath and Law." And, again, that doesn't seem like too much of a problem. After all, I wouldn't expect to be sharing the Girl Scout locker room or a pup tent with teenage girls.
Some things are just too common sensical to require much discussion. But then, if common sense were common, everyone would have some. And, in this matter, the liberals obviously do not. <http://www.lambdalegal.org/>
So, the sniping from the left begins.
Therefore, to you many millions of old Boy Scouts out there, we must again do our "duty." The Boy Scouts of America needs our help -- both in money and volunteer time. It's time "to help other people" again and insure that as many boys as possible have a happy and productive Scouting experience.
"On my honor, I will do my best." Will you please join in and do YOUR "duty" once again? <http://www.bsa.scouting.org>
A company named Applied Digital Solutions, Inc. is announcing a new technology they say "will revolutionize E-Business security, emergency location and medical monitoring and commodities supply chain management (food safety). That technology has been named Digital Angel." The new technology is causing quite a stir among liberty lovers around the country, too.
Applied Digital Solutions latest press release announces an up-and-coming show and tell meeting for investors:
"This technology relates directly to the exploding wireless marketplace. We'll be demonstrating for the first time ever that wireless telecommunications systems and bio-sensor devices -- capable of measuring and transmitting critical body function data -- can be successfully linked together with GPS technology and integrated with the Internet.
"Those attending the event in New York City will see a working, multimedia demonstration of Digital Angel's technological building blocks. A miniature sensor device -- smaller than a grain of rice and equipped with a tiny antenna -- will capture and wirelessly transmit a person's vital body-function data, such as body temperature or pulse, to an Internet-integrated ground station. In addition, the antenna will also receive information regarding the location of the individual from the GPS satellite. Both sets of data -- medical information and location -- will then be wirelessly transmitted to the ground station and made available on Web-enabled desktop, laptop or wireless devices. This demonstration represents the first time these technologies have been united into one functioning system.
"In some of its applications, the tiny device is expected to be bonded closely to the body or implanted just under the skin. The Company believes Digital Angel will be able to send and receive data and be located by GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. In addition to monitoring the location and medical condition of at-risk patients, the Company believes Digital Angel could have other applications that will prove to be extremely popular in the marketplace. These applications include locating lost or missing individuals or household pets; tracking endangered wildlife; managing livestock and other farm- related animals; pinpointing the location of valuable stolen property; finding lost airline baggage and postal packages; managing the commodity supply chain; preventing the unauthorized use of firearms; and providing a tamper- proof means of identification for enhanced e-commerce security." <http://www.digitalangel.net/>
So, let's see here: A device the size of a grain of rice implanted under the skin, used to tag things (including people) that can get lost and can also be used to lock up a gun against unauthorized use. Oh, and just as an added attraction, it can monitor physiological functions.
From a medical engineering viewpoint, we immediately see two major problems: The battery power supply will need to be greatly larger then a grain of rice. And, to measure physiological functions, there will need to be some electrodes implanted. The FDA will have a lot to say about both of these problems.
From a moral point of view, we see a whole set of major problems. Few people will consent to having a locator device implanted in them -- even if it is medically safe. Nor would most people want their location or physiological data transmitted on the Internet for all to see. Also, if they can turn it on from a distance, we can turn it off (or vice-versa), so using it to control access to a handgun presents some very interesting possibilities for mischief.
The company's literature states that Digital Angel will remain dormant most of the time. They say it will "only be activated by the wearer or by commands from the ground station. The purpose is to save battery energy and to avoid interference with other devices, such as medical equipment or airplanes. The unit can be turned off by the wearer, thereby making the monitoring voluntary. It will not intrude on personal privacy except in applications applied to the tracking of criminals."
No doubt it will have to be off most of the time. Else, we are talking about a battery about the size of a pacemaker. However, this information is contradictory because it would have to be "on standby" enough to receive a transmitted signal to activate. This also means that anyone with a hand-held device can switch it on or off at will -- with or without the user's permission.
There is yet another problem, though. The device will radiate radio frequency waves at some frequency to cell phone and/or satellite receivers -- else, it cannot transmit any meaningful data. That means the output power to transmit data must be in some multiple of watts of power. Which also means that the device would cause cell damage to the host body through both radio waves and heat.
For these and other reasons, we doubt this device will become very popular. It is true that such a device may act as a very simple transponder/locator, as related in the literature presented. However, in the size mentioned, it will not be useful for much else.

The other day I was watching "Capitol Gang" and Bob Novak was debating Margaret Carlson and the ever- charming James Carville when Novak said something that almost knocked me off my chair. He described the tax policies of Fightin' Al as being "neo-Marxist". "My God," I thought, "the 'M' word spoken on TV." There seems to be some unspoken rule on the political talk shows that disallows any mention of Marxism or communism. You never hear such words from George Will or Sean Hannity, no matter how appropriate they might be. If such words were uttered, it is assumed that the entire media world would descend on the speaker in an apocalyptic condemnation.
Actually, Bob was less than accurate in describing Fightin' Al's approach to government as "neo- Marxist". This is good old-fashioned classic Marxism of the kind that would make Karl Marx let out a cheer from his tomb. The best example of this is in the debate about tax cuts. Bush wants tax money returned to the people who paid it. Fightin' Al calls this a risky scheme, giving tax breaks to the very wealthy. Bush asks if Fightin' Al is against giving money back to the people who gave it, whereupon Fightin' Al changes the subject. In the background we can hear a voice repeating as it grows louder, "from each according to his ability to each according to his need." Can it be that only Bob Novak has noticed?
Fightin' Al wants to keep any semblance of religion out of schools or government and again we hear Karl Marx's voice, "religion is the opiate of the masses." When Hillary Clinton wanted to nationalize all health care, did anyone step forward and identify it as "socialized medicine"? Our United States Constitution is curiously absent in any political debates unless it happens to involve the media and freedom of speech. We even have fifty-eight members of Congress joined in the Congressional Progressive Caucus socialist group, pledged to undermine the very Constitution that they have taken a solemn oath to uphold, and nobody mentions it.
When Bob Novak stuck his toe in the politically incorrect waters on Capitol Gang, more people should have noticed and jumped in with him. When Fightin' Al comes out in public and says he wants to redistribute the wealth through taxation, by God that's Marxism and communism and we should scream it from the rooftops. Yes it's true that a Senator named McCarthy got in trouble fifty years ago for chasing communists too hard, but so what? There's that eight hundred pound gorilla sitting over there in the corner and we'd better stop pretending we don't see him.
[Two men, but a single thought: "Working men of all countries, unite!" Karl Marx, 1840. "I'm for the people vs. the powerful." Albert Gore, Jr., 2000]
