Round and round it goes. And where it will crash, nobody knows. But, crash it shall. They're calling it a "guided fall." Actually, "plunge" might be more like it. Regardless, it will end in a very spectacular 137-ton burn and crash.
Russia is done with Mir, their 15 year old space station. So, sometime between March 18 and March 28 -- probably on March 22 -- someplace on earth will see a lot of fire come down from the sky and then a big crash. If all goes well, according to the Korolyov control center, near Moscow, the fall of the Mir station will probably be induced this coming March 22nd. The plan is to try to steer it to crash into the Pacific Ocean. Based on all accounts, that is apparently far from being a sure thing, though. In fact, the only sure thing about any of this is that the Mir will be falling down sometime within the next couple weeks. Someplace.
More information can be found at the Mir Reentry web page.(1) NASA, among others, is tracking Mir and provides minute by minute mapping of where it is on a special web site.(2)
After watching the Mir orbit for a while, one gets the impression that it is somewhat out of control. There is probably very good reason for that.
Get ready to duck. Because there is a good chance that, upon reentry, it will break up into many large chunks that may fall over a wide area of the globe.
